Armenia Doubles Size of Kosovo Peacekeeping Contingent to 70

The smallest ex-Soviet republic is doubling the size of its peacekeeping contingent in Kosovo, Europe's newest state.

Armenia sent a company of 70 troops to Kosovo on Monday. They will replace the 34-person Armenian platoon now serving there.

About 17,000 NATO-led peacekeepers are deployed in Kosovo amid persistent tension between Serbs and the ethnic Albanian majority nearly a decade after a U.S.-led NATO air war stopped attacks by Serb forces against Albanians.

Kosovo declared independence from Serbia in February. But Armenia has not recognized Kosovo's independence.
