Acts Are Important than Appeals12:04 Yerevan | 8:04 GMT | Thursday 26 June
After the post-electoral events the U.S. government voiced concern about deviation from democracy and stated that it may cause to suspend the 235 million dollar-worth program of the Millennium Challenge. In this connection the reporters asked the U.S. assistant secretary for democracy, human rights and labor David Cramer in a news conference on June 25 about the stance of the U.S. government regarding the fate of the Millennium Challenge program.
David Kramer said he could not talk about the MC program but he said the benchmarks of eligibility for the program are fair government. He said the MCC will continue to follow the developments and will make a decision later.
The reporters reminded that the government, as well as the leader of the opposition Levon Ter-Petrosyan have appealed to the U.S. government not to suspend the program because it would be harmful to the Armenian people. They asked what effect those appeals may have. David Kramer answered that the best guarantee for the continuation of the program is the return of Armenia to the track for democracy. News
